Stage 1: The needle carrying a thread through its point,      penetrates through the fabric.

Stage 2: After the needle reaches its bottom most movement it begins to withdraw from the fabric. This action of withdrawal causes a loop of thread to form at the eye of the needle. The shuttle hook passes through this loop to ‘catch’ it and slip it over the bobbin to form a lock of the bottom and top threads.

Stage 3: On withdrawal of the needle from the fabric the feed teeth proceed to rise, grip the fabric and move it forward ready for the next stitch.

There are several mechanisms for driving the bobbin

Rotary - where the bobbin hook rotates in a circular motion, catching the stitch from the needle, passes it over the bobbin and carries on for the next stitch.

Oscillating - where the bobbin hook rotates catching the stitch from the needle, passes it over the bobbin and returns back for the next stitch.
